Event: Postcard and Collection for Military
Location: Cluetts, Chicopee Savings Bank, Ware Town Hall, Ware Senior Center
Sponsors: Ware Scouts and Ware 250th Anniversary Committee
Information: [email protected] or www.ware 250.org The Ware 250th Anniversary Committee and the Ware Scouts are asking the community’s participation in their efforts to collect needed supplies to send to military personnel serving abroad. As part of Ware’s 250th Anniversary Celebration, Salute Ware Soldiers, the Scouts will be placing collection boxes at a number of businesses in Ware.
“On this, our 250th anniversary year, the Committee thought it most important to support our military both past and present, and recognize the sacrifices and contributions they have made to the Town of Ware and the Country” states Cindi LaBombard a member of the Ware 250th Anniversary Committee. “This collection is one of the many ways that the citizens of Ware can participate and thank these brave men and women.”
“This is just one of many projects where the Scouts and the Ware 250th have combined efforts and we are thrilled to have them collaborate on this very important task.” says LaBombard.
The collection boxes will be placed in early May, and Ware residents are encouraged to drop off donations at the following locations; Chicopee Savings Bank at Gibbs Crossing, Cluetts on Main Street, Ware Town Hall on Main Street and the Ware Senior Center on Robbins Road. Lists of needed items are posted below or can be picked up at the donation sites. All donations will be sent to military installations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In addition, residents are encouraged to write a postcard to be sent along with the items. Postcards from Ware will be available at the same locations. The Ware Girl scouts have donated postcards with the Ware 250th anniversary logo and the inscription “In gratitude and appreciation the Town of Ware, Massachusetts is proud to salute all men and women serving in the U.S. Military. God Speed--- Your honor we Trust” The postcard has room for a personal note to a service man or woman.
“We are hoping to gather at least 2500 post cards and we are asking the public to stop by and write a note of thanks and encouragement to those who are serving in the military” said Jill Sorel, Ware Girls Scouts Service Unit Manager. “We hope we can surpass our goal. We would love to have to print more.” Other upcoming Salute Ware Soldiers events include “Chair in the Square Haircuts” featuring haircuts, bake sale, massages, and recruitment drive for Ware Veterans, on April 30th (for details, click here); an exhibit of military memorabilia by the Ware Historical Society at the American Legion Post on May 21 and 22 noon to 4pm; a Catholic Mass in honor of the Military on May 29 at 9:30am at St. Mary’s Church in Ware, and the Memorial Day Service on May 30th.
